KENYA: Preparations for Blessed Irene Stefani Nyaatha Feast Day Underway

NYERI OCTOBER 25, 2016 (CISA) – Preparations for Blessed Irene Stefani ‘Nyaatha’ feast day is underway at Gikondi Parish in the Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri.

The feast day will be celebrated on October 29 at Blessed Irene Stefani Girls High school, about one kilometer away from Gikondi parish.

“After Sr Irene beatification on May 23 last year, Pope Francis declared that the birthday to heaven of Blessed Irene be celebrated on October 31 every year. But this year the day falls on a Monday therefore the Archbishop and the organising committee have decided to have the celebration conducted on Saturday October 29 as liturgy allows,” Fr Peter Githinji, Nyeri Archdiocese Postulator told CISA.

The Catholic Archdiocese of Nyeri has been holding novena prayers from October 22 – 29 as part of the preparations of the event.

Fr Githinji said that organizing committee had also organized a prayer vigil in Gikondi, a day before the celebrations.

“There will be a prayer vigil with worship and praise especially for young people on Friday October 28 dedicated to Blessed Irene Nyaatha,” said Fr Githinji.

Archbishop Peter Kairo of Nyeri among other bishops, priests, men and women religious and faithful from different parts of the country will attend the event.

Blessed Irene lived, worked and died in Gikondi and was beatified at Dedan Kimathi University Grounds in Nyeri on May 23.

The historic event was graced by Polycarp Cardinal Pengo of the Catholic Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania who was the Pope’s delegate for the beatification and John Cardinal Njue of Nairobi who was the main celebrant.
