ZAMBIA: Archbishop Evacuated to S Africa for Special Treatment

LUSAKA JULY 21, 2015 (CISA) – Archbishop Telesphore-George Mpundu of the Archdiocese of Lusaka has been evacuated to South Africa for specialist treatment.

President Edgar Lungu on July 13 ordered the evacuation of the Catholic prelate who is said to be suffering from acute high blood pressure.

According to the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC), the Archbishop almost collapsed after administering the Sacrament of Confirmation at one of the parishes on the periphery of the city of Lusaka.

“His Excellency President Edgar Chagwa Lungu has ordered the evacuation of the Archbishop of Lusaka Telesphore Mpundu to South Africa for specialist treatment and His Grace, the Archbishop has since arrived in South Africa,” Amos Chanda the President’s special assistant for press and public relations told ZNBC on July 19.

Archbishop Mpundu was first admitted to the country’s University Teaching Hospital (UTH) on July 13.
